The wind is a paddle boarder’s biggest nemesis. Understanding wind charts and how to cope in windy conditions are invaluable skills for any paddle boarder. These skills help you to avoid accidentally going out in the wrong conditions and help you to cope should the weather turn unexpectedly on route.
The 3 hour course is a mixture of classroom based theory on how to understand wind charts, followed by a practical on the water. We will teach you the techniques you need to know to minimise energy wastage, should you find yourself in these conditions.

The wind is a paddle boarders biggest nemesis. Being able to read and understand wind & tide charts is simply the most essential skill. It will enable you to make quality, safe decisions on when and where you can go paddling. This course is a super informative two-part day: 1 hour in the classroom and 1.5 hours on the water, with the classroom session taking place at wesup Gylly Beach in our container; we will do our best to maximise the amount of space available to us and be socially distant, if you are uncomfortable you can access the classroom session from our decking space outside.
This course is suitable for improvers, rather than total beginners. You must have either taken our Beginner & Improver Clinic or feel that you are of a fairly confident paddling ability. This course will teach you how to forecast the choppy sea conditions, so you don’t arrive at the beach disappointed. It will also teach you how to plan your journey, so you don’t end up with a scary and exhausting ‘up-wind paddling slog on the way home from your otherwise lovely micro-adventure. For times when you get accidentally caught out by the wind and tide, you will learn the essential practical paddle skills you’ll need to cope when the weather conditions are less than favourable.
At the end of the paddling in the wind clinic, you will be have the skills to bring yourself to safety, whilst conserving your energy!
If it is your first time paddling, we recommend a wetsuit to help your confidence and settle any worries about falling in or getting cold. During this course, you will be moving around your board a lot. Please be mindful that this means that there is an increased chance of falling in! We rent lovely quality, super stretchy black wetsuits free of charge.
If you do not like wetsuits, please wear warm layers that you don’t mind getting wet such as gym gear. We highly recommend that new paddlers wear one of our comfy, warm buoyancy aids which are included free of charge. Waterproof socks, barefoot trainers or good quality wetsuit boots are perfect for keeping your feet warm.
