After a crazy start to the 2020 summer season, we are so stoked to be back on the water, soaking up the sun and salt water at our gorgeous home on Gylly Beach. Although we’d usually kick off our SUP hire and paddleboard lessons in early April, we had to hold on this year until the middle of June when the lockdown restrictions began to lift and we could welcome everyone back safely. Our beloved club members came in for a ‘soft opening’ a couple of weeks before we opened fully to the public on the 4th July, with all our new safety measures in place. We started strongly with a Friday night SUP surf session before taking a trip to our brand new wesup. coffeebox which overlooks the bay from its prime location on Pendennis Point.
We have the luxury of a beautiful outdoor, open space as our operating area so are taking full advantage of that this summer! Across the country people are falling back in love with being outside and spending time in nature, and we’re lucky enough to embody that wholeheartedly here in Falmouth. Most of our visitors spend 90% of their time out on the water paddling (although club members have been known to loiter in the shop a little longer having a chat and a cuppa… ) so confined contact is kept to an absolute minimum.
Our covid-safe procedures also include:
- Encouraged online booking wherever possible, to reduce contact on the day
- A one-way system around our open and airy shopfront
- Hand sanitiser from our local refill shop un_rap before you fill out your activity forms
- Anti-bac dunking of wetsuits and buoyancy aids between each customer
- Fifteen minute gaps between paddle hires to reduce crowding and give our instructors time to wipe down all equipment
- Group sizes are always matched to the current government guidelines
At a time when so many compromises are having to be made, we are just so happy to be getting friends old and new out on the water. Already since re-opening we’ve had multiple family groups, private lessons, paddle tours of Gyllyngvase Bay, SUP yoga sessions, a Plastic Patrol beach clean event, and a late-night paddle watching the full moon rise. As we progress through a busy August in Falmouth, we’re looking forward to filling our days with time spent on the sea in great company!
Whether you’re in Falmouth just for a few days or you’re lucky enough to call it home, we’d love to paddle with you. If there’s anything the lockdown has reminded us of, it’s our deep and genuine gratitude for the people and places that we love – and we’ve got heaps of that down at wesup. Gylly Beach! Our friendly team are always happy to chat to you about membership or one-off experiences, so pop in and see us or browse and book via the website.
We wish you all a safe and happy Summer, and look forward to paddling with you soon!
